[Book Review] New Perspectives in Media Translation: Transcreation in the Digital Age

This review examines the volume edited by Loukia Kostopoulou and Parthena Charalampidou, which explores “transcreation” in practices involving media translation-adaptation and content production. The book brings together insights from both industry and academia across 12 chapters.
Key Findings
The volume is structured into three thematic parts: theoretical foundations, practical applications in different media, and the training of transcreators. Theoretical chapters analyze the evolution of “transcreation” and its roots in various geographical contexts like India and Brazil. Practical sections delve into video game localization, such as Arena of Valor, and the intricacies of advertising, emphasizing the role of human creativity that cannot be replaced by machines. Finally, the training section advocates for pedagogical models that include emotional skills and proactive empathy.
Critique
While the volume offers theoretical depth and multidisciplinary insights, it faces challenges regarding inconsistent definitions of transcreation. Furthermore, the case studies primarily focus on Western markets and East Asian contexts, potentially overlooking other underrepresented regions.
Conclusion
Despite minor limitations, this work is a remarkable contribution to translation studies, providing practical guidance for professionals in the digital age.

07 May 2569, กรุงเทพมหานคร – การปฏิวัติทางดิจิทัลได้เปลี่ยนแปลงภูมิทัศน์ของสื่อไปอย่างถาวร ส่งผลให้จำเป็นต้องมีวิธีการแปลรูปแบบใหม่ที่ก้าวข้ามคำจำกัดความดั้งเดิม บทวิจารณ์นี้สำรวจหนังสือที่รวบรวมโดย ลูเกีย คอสโตพูลู และ พาร์เธนา ชาราลัมพิดู ซึ่งมุ่งเน้นการศึกษา “การสรรสร้างข้ามภาษา” (Transcreation) ในการปรับเปลี่ยนสื่อและการผลิตเนื้อหาใหม่ โดยเป็นการรวมมุมมองจากทั้งภาคอุตสาหกรรมและภาควิชาการผ่านเนื้อหาทั้งหมด 12 บท
ประเด็นสำคัญ
เนื้อหาในเล่มแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ส่วนหลัก ได้แก่ รากฐานทางทฤษฎี การประยุกต์ใช้จริงในสื่อต่าง ๆ และการฝึกฝนนักสรรสร้างข้ามภาษา ในส่วนของทฤษฎีมีการวิเคราะห์วิวัฒนาการของคำว่า Transcreation และต้นกำเนิดในบริบทที่หลากหลาย เช่น อินเดียและบราซิล ส่วนการนำไปใช้จริงได้เจาะลึกถึงการปรับเนื้อหาเกม (Localization) เช่น เกม Arena of Valor และความซับซ้อนของงานโฆษณา โดยเน้นย้ำว่าความคิดสร้างสรรค์ของมนุษย์เป็นสิ่งที่เครื่องจักรไม่สามารถแทนที่ได้ และส่วนสุดท้ายได้เสนอโมเดลการสอนที่รวมทักษะด้านอารมณ์และการเอาใจใส่ผู้อื่นเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน
ข้อวิจารณ์
แม้ว่าหนังสือเล่มนี้จะมีความลุ่มลึกทางทฤษฎีและให้มุมมองที่หลากหลาย แต่ยังคงมีความท้าทายในเรื่องความไม่สอดคล้องกันของนิยามคำว่า Transcreation ในแต่ละบท นอกจากนี้ กรณีศึกษาส่วนใหญ่มักมุ่งเน้นไปที่ตลาดตะวันตกและบริบทของเอเชียตะวันออก ซึ่งอาจทำให้ละเลยภูมิภาคอื่น ๆ ที่ยังไม่ถูกนำเสนออย่างเพียงพอ
สรุป
แม้จะมีข้อจำกัดอยู่บ้าง แต่ผลงานชิ้นนี้ถือเป็นคุณูปการที่สำคัญต่อวงการแปลศึกษา โดยให้คำแนะนำที่เป็นประโยชน์สำหรับมืออาชีพในยุคดิจิทัล
