International Collaboration to Advance Standards in Subtitling and Audiovisual Translation: SEAProTI – Subtitler’s – AVTE Meeting Report
14 December 2025, Bangkok – A recent meeting between the Southeast Asian Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (SEAProTI), the Subtitlers’ Association (Subtitler’s), and AudioVisual Translators Europe (AVTE) marked an important step toward strengthening cross-regional cooperation in subtitling and audiovisual translation. The discussions focused on establishing shared professional standards, developing structured training pathways, and creating long-term mechanisms to support the growing media and streaming industries across Asia and Europe.
Developing a Unified Platform and Training Framework
One of the core topics was the creation of a standardized online platform for subtitlers and audiovisual translators. SEAProTI emphasized the need for a clear and consistent training system that aligns with global best practices. This includes a formal curriculum, a minimum threshold of practical experience, and competency-based assessments before translators are allowed to work on the platform.
Subtitler’s and AVTE shared their experiences from Europe, where structured guidelines and transparent quality-control mechanisms have long been established. The meeting also examined issues related to content accessibility, using Indian cinema in Thailand as a case study. Although many Indian films come with English subtitles, the lack of Thai-language subtitling has prevented these films from gaining broader viewership. As a result, dedicated Indian movie channels in Thailand were ultimately discontinued.
This example highlights how essential localized translation is to a content platform’s survival and shows the practical consequences of limited availability of trained audiovisual translators in specific markets. The European associations noted that similar challenges occur elsewhere when translation infrastructure is underdeveloped.
Collaboration on Multilingual Style Guides
The organizations also discussed developing multilingual style guides for audiovisual translation, covering languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Lao, and Thai. An English version would serve as the reference for European and Western audiences, while regional editions would be adapted to cultural and linguistic contexts in Asia.
The goal is to harmonize translation standards, reduce inconsistencies across countries, and clarify technical requirements for subtitling. All parties acknowledged that finding qualified specialists for each language remains a challenge, particularly when academic and industry standards vary significantly across regions.
Future Directions and Joint Commitments
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to ongoing collaboration. SEAProTI will continue refining its training programs, assessment procedures, and quality-control systems, while the European associations will provide technical input and share established standards from the audiovisual sector in Europe.
All organizations expressed the intention to monitor developments in the global streaming industry closely, recognizing that high-quality translation is now a competitive advantage for media companies worldwide.

ความท้าทายด้านเนื้อหาภาพยนตร์อินเดียในตลาดไทย
ที่ประชุมได้อภิปรายปัญหาที่สะท้อนความสำคัญของการแปลเนื้อหาให้เหมาะกับตลาดท้องถิ่น โดยยกตัวอย่างตลาดภาพยนตร์อินเดียในประเทศไทย แม้จะมีคำบรรยายภาษาอังกฤษอย่างแพร่หลาย แต่การขาดการแปลภาษาไทยอย่างเป็นระบบทำให้เนื้อหาไม่สามารถเข้าถึงผู้ชมได้กว้างเพียงพอ สุดท้ายช่องภาพยนตร์อินเดียที่เคยให้บริการจึงต้องยุติการดำเนินงาน ปัญหานี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงบทบาทสำคัญของการแปลสื่ออย่างมืออาชีพในอุตสาหกรรมสตรีมมิ่งที่มีการแข่งขันสูง และเน้นย้ำถึงความจำเป็นของบุคลากรที่ผ่านการฝึกอบรมตามมาตรฐาน
ความร่วมมือด้านการพัฒนาคู่มือสไตล์หลายภาษา
อีกหนึ่งหัวข้อสำคัญคือการพัฒนาคู่มือสไตล์สำหรับงานแปลภาพยนตร์ในหลายภาษา ได้แก่ จีน ญี่ปุ่น เวียดนาม ลาว และไทย โดยคู่มือภาษาอังกฤษจะใช้เป็นมาตรฐานกลางสำหรับการเผยแพร่ในยุโรปและประเทศตะวันตก ขณะที่เวอร์ชันเอเชียจะถูกปรับให้เหมาะสมกับบริบททางภาษาและวัฒนธรรมของภูมิภาค คู่มือดังกล่าวมีเป้าหมายเพื่อยกระดับคุณภาพงานแปลให้มีความสม่ำเสมอ ลดความแตกต่างของรูปแบบงานระหว่างประเทศ และสร้างความเข้าใจร่วมกันในข้อกำหนดด้านเทคนิคของงานซับไตเติลในระดับสากล อย่างไรก็ตาม ทุกฝ่ายยอมรับว่าโจทย์สำคัญคือการหาผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละภาษาและสาขาให้สอดคล้องกับมาตรฐานทางวิชาการและวิชาชีพ
