SEAProTI President Serves as Court Interpreter in Central Juvenile and Family Court for Legal Child Recognition Case
On 22 July 2025, Ms. Wanitcha Sumanas, President of the Southeast Asian Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (SEAProTI), served as an interpreter in the courtroom of the Central Juvenile and Family Court in Bangkok. The case involved a petition for the court to declare a child as the legal offspring of a deceased individual.
This type of case requires a detailed and structured hearing process. It typically begins with an examination of the petitioner—the child’s mother—regarding her relationship with the deceased, the pregnancy, childbirth, and circumstances demonstrating the deceased’s recognition of the child as their own. The process also includes the presentation of witness testimonies, documentary evidence, and scientific proof such as DNA test results. The interpreter may be required to perform sight translation of foreign-language documents directly in court.
Throughout the hearing, the interpreter is responsible for rendering all statements, questions, and responses accurately using consecutive interpreting, in which the interpreter waits until the speaker finishes a full thought before translating. The goal is to convey the original meaning and intent faithfully, without omitting, adding to, or altering the content. The interpreter must also refrain from expressing any opinions or personal reactions to the facts of the case.
Ms. Wanitcha adhered strictly to the professional ethics of court interpreting, which include confidentiality of case information, maintaining strict neutrality, and refraining from giving legal advice or engaging in personal conversations with either party. Professional conduct also encompasses preparation, punctuality, wearing appropriate courtroom attire, and maintaining a respectful demeanor toward all participants in the legal process.
Her performance in this case reflects not only a deep understanding of courtroom procedures, particularly in family law cases, but also a strong commitment to professional standards and ethics. It exemplifies the vital role of interpreters in ensuring fair access to justice in a multilingual and multicultural society.

The Southeast Asian Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (SEAProTI) has officially announced the criteria and qualifications for individuals to register as “Certified Translators,” “Translation Certification Providers,” and “Certified Interpreters” under the association’s regulations. วันที่ 22 กรกฎาคม 2568 — คุณวณิชชา สุมานัส นายกสมาคมวิชาชีพนักแปลและล่ามแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (SEAProTI) ปฏิบัติหน้าที่ล่ามในห้องพิจารณาคดี ณ ศาลเยาวชนและครอบครัวกลาง กรุงเทพมหานคร ในคดีที่มีการร้องขอให้ศาลมีคำสั่งรับรองเด็กเป็นบุตรโดยชอบด้วยกฎหมายของผู้เสียชีวิต
คดีลักษณะนี้ต้องอาศัยกระบวนการไต่สวนที่ซับซ้อนและมีหลายขั้นตอน ตั้งแต่การสอบถามผู้ร้องซึ่งเป็นมารดาของเด็ก ถึงความสัมพันธ์กับผู้ตาย การตั้งครรภ์และการคลอดบุตร ไปจนถึงการนำสืบพยานบุคคล พยานเอกสาร และผลตรวจพิสูจน์ทางวิทยาศาสตร์ เช่น การตรวจ DNA ซึ่งล่ามอาจต้องแปลเอกสารจากภาษาต่างประเทศทันทีในที่ประชุมศาล
ระหว่างการพิจารณาคดี ล่ามจะต้องแปลคำให้การ คำถาม และคำตอบของคู่ความและพยานโดยใช้วิธีแปลสลับ (consecutive interpretation) เพื่อถ่ายทอดสารอย่างถูกต้องและครบถ้วนตามลำดับกระบวนการของศาล โดยต้องคงความหมายและเจตนาเดิมของผู้พูดโดยไม่แต่งเติมหรือตัดทอน รวมถึงไม่แสดงความคิดเห็นส่วนตัวหรือแสดงความรู้สึกใด ๆ ต่อข้อเท็จจริงในคดี
คุณวณิชชาได้ยึดถือแนวปฏิบัติอย่างเคร่งครัดตามหลักจรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพล่ามศาล ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการรักษาความลับของข้อมูลในคดี การวางตัวเป็นกลาง ปฏิบัติหน้าที่เฉพาะในกรอบของการแปลภาษาโดยไม่ให้คำแนะนำทางกฎหมาย ตลอดจนการแสดงออกถึงความเป็นมืออาชีพทั้งในด้านการเตรียมความพร้อม การแต่งกาย การตรงต่อเวลา และการให้ความเคารพต่อทุกฝ่ายในกระบวนการยุติธรรม
การปฏิบัติงานในคดีนี้ไม่เพียงสะท้อนถึงความเข้าใจลึกซึ้งของล่ามในระบบกระบวนพิจารณาคดีครอบครัวเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นแบบอย่างของการรักษามาตรฐานวิชาชีพและจริยธรรมที่จำเป็นต่อการอำนวยความยุติธรรมอย่างเป็นธรรมในสังคมพหุวัฒนธรรม
